½ Prince Volume 2: Reality and Fantasy

Extra Chapter: Diary – translated by Eilinel

Guiliastes:

A genius with an IQ of 200, he entered university at the age of fifteen. He graduated at eighteen, received a doctorate at twenty-two. Then, furthering his studies overseas, he returned with another doctorate at twenty-five.

At twenty-six, top universities in the country were vying to employ him as a professor.

***

I looked at the pile of recruitment letters on the table. Which university should I go to? I thought, shaking my head at the ridiculousness of the situation.

I don’t even need ten minutes to calculate which university would be the most advantageous for me, so what is there to feel troubled about? Right there’s nothing to worry about!

Still, in a fit of irritation, I gathered up all of the recruitment letters and savagely thrust them at the ceiling. The sheaves of paper fell, scattering all over the floor, except for one letter that landed on the table.

“It’s you then!” I picked up the recruitment letter, and barely glanced at the university’s name before putting my signature on the paper. Grabbing my helmet, I headed out to mail the document. Read More »

UPDATE 3-NOV-09: Sorry guys, stuff cropped up over the past three weeks. I’ve already started work on translating V2C7, but it’ll probably be delayed for a while longer. Will update when it’s half complete. If it looks like it’ll have to be delayed for a long time, I’ll upload V2C8 by the end of this week. (V2C8 is actually a extra chapter so it doesn’t really affect the storyline. However, it takes place chronologically after V2C6, so we didn’t upload it before V2C6.

Hello, everyone!

V2C6 has been uploaded. This update is just to let everyone know that V2C7 may be delayed a little. I’m taking over the chapter from k00st3r, but I’ve been working on something else recently (try guessing, lol) so it may be slower than usual. No more than three weeks, though.

Thanks to all the well-wishers! Because of you guys, the first thought that came to my head this morning was, “Must…upload…V2C6…”

Chapter 6: The Truth, Revealed? – translated by Eilinel

Online

“Prince! Prince, are you online? Quick, come to our usual place. We’ve got a huge problem.”

The instant I got online, Lolidragon PMed me with such urgency in her voice that, before I even got a handle on the situation, I had already begun to run toward the meeting place.

“What happened?” I demanded, as I charged into the restaurant booth with an anxious expression.

“Right, now that everyone is here, I can start talking. The officials have announced that today’s match will be cancelled,” Lolidragon said calmly. Everyone in Odd Squad widened their eyes in surprise. “The competition is delayed until next week, when all teams will participate in the melee to decide the champion team.”

“What will the melee consist of? And why did they suddenly change the competition method?” Wolf inquired thoughtfully. Read More »

Chapter 5: Zhuo Lin Bin and Ou Yang Mei – translated by Smerian

From the time I woke up, cooked breakfast, chased after the bus, all the way until Gui’s class ended, my mind was on only one thing: Should I sneak into the school clinic and take a peek at Wolf-dàgē or not?

Rationally speaking, it would be wiser for me not to go; after all, who knows if Wolf-dàgē will recognize me or not? However, emotionally speaking… Ohhh, I REALLY want to see what Wolf-dàgē actually looks like! There’s just no way he resembles his in-game counterpart, is there!? That’s obvious, since Wolf-dàgē isn’t a werewolf.

Uncertain about what to do, I could only start plucking flower petals… “Go look, don’t go look, go look, don’t go look, go look…”

Suddenly, a deep voice spoke from behind me. “Miss, you can’t pluck flowers here!” Read More »

Hello all!

It’s been a really long while since we’ve done any updating. We’ve finally updated V2C4, but do take note that the second half hasn’t been completely proof-read yet because Sooty’s been busy. Depending on what happens IRL for the next couple of weeks for the crew, I may simply upload V2C5 before our third round of proof-reading is complete. The downside is that the quality may go down somewhat, because Sooty’s awesome at catching all the little errors we make in translating from Chinese to English. You guys can expect another update within a fortnight, however.

In any case, school’s been crazy (as expected) and it’s been very rough going. If you see any major mistakes or typos in our not-completely proof-read chapters, just point them out to us and we’ll fix them in a jiffy.

Chapter 4: Fate – translated by Spence

“Listen up, guys!” Wolf-dàgē’s tone was serious as he addressed us before the start of our first round in the finals. “We will need to work harder than ever now that we’re in the finals. The opponents that we are going to face will definitely be worthy foes. We must not take them lightly.”

All of us nodded earnestly.

“Lolidragon, do you know who we’re fighting next?” I asked. Lolidragon nodded, and I took another bite of bread before pressing her for details about the enemy.

Lolidragon wrinkled her brow and said, “They’re called ‘Ascendant Dragons’. I haven’t heard any special rumors about them, but their team’s combat strength seems to be pretty average. They only managed to get into the finals because they haven’t met any strong opponents thus far, so they should be pretty easy to handle.”

I let out a sigh of relief. “That’s great, then. It seems like our first match will be a cinch.” Read More »

Chapter 3: Odd Squad Strikes Back – translated by xosugarhighox

“Ahahaha…” I laughed callously. “Hahahaha, I’m not scared. I’m not scared! Hahaha!”

“Looks like Prince is really scared…” Ugly Wolf looked helplessly at me, who had been laughing maniacally in a corner for a while now.

“Well, he’s always been the one who slaughters everyone in his path. Now that the time for retribution has arrived, obviously he’d be scared!” Lolidragon responded indifferently.

“What do we do, then? With things like this, how are we going to compete?” Yu Lian asked, her voice filled with anxiety. “Don’t tell me we’re going to have to forfeit!” Read More »

Hello again, everyone! It’s been a really hectic fortnight with one disaster after another for a number of us at PR! (I’ll go into the details later…) but here’s the revised version of the Volume 1 PDF. We’ve noted most of the typos that you’ve spotted, and here’s a huge thanks to those of you who spotted them and went to the trouble of informing us. Here are a few friendly reminders from us:

  • Please do not distribute our PDF file in either hard copy or soft copy. This includes uploading our PDF file on other file sharing sites and/or on IRC.
  • Please do not steal credit or (attempt to) profit monetarily from our hard work.
  • Please note that this is a fan-created version of volume 1 and is in no way an official version of the novel.

Printing this out is probably fine so long as your printer has enough ink and if you have enough paper. To those who have already printed out the earlier version…well, the changes made are really minute, so don’t burn the older version! Be nice to trees!

EDIT 6/8/2009: The forum has been moved to http://halfprince.ipbfree.com/

UPDATE (30th July) – Some updates added to the section on names, and also the IRC section.

Hullo, all!

In case you didn’t notice (highly unlikely, though), V2C2’s been completely uploaded. We skipped an update for the previous chapter, so this update’s going to be super long. We’ve got new translators, some notes on various odds and ends about changes to names, and… never mind. Just read on, please!

New translators

We have two new translators in our midst, and they are

  1. Samuki, or Kii, who has translated V3C1 and V3C2, and will be translating V3C8
  2. Amphrase, or Desiree, who will be translating V3C7!

Everyone, welcome them on board!

New status page

Since there’s been more and more people asking when our next update will be, we’ve put up a new page listing all the chapters that we are currently working on, as well as the status of the translation and proof-reading processes in detail. There’s also some information about how our proof-reading process works, so that you can understand when we talk about “first round of proof-reading” and etc. We will update it regularly (well, regularly enough) so you can be fairly certain that the information on it is up to date. Just in case you can’t tell where it is, it’s the tab right behind the “FAQ” tab at the top of the page.

Chapter 2: Food is Invincible! – translated by Shonen19

Icy expression? Check!

Blood Tiara? Check!

Hairstyle? Check!

Clothes? Check!

All checked! Wahaha, everything’s perfect and in place! After a short three second deliberation, I’d decided to use the “icy bad boy” strategy, as per usual. After all, isn’t it widely known that girls dig bad boys?

I looked at Gui and thought, Not bad, not bad at all! Under my coercion, (Weird; when I threatened to beat him up, he refused to cooperate, but when I threatened not to beat him up, he agreed… Is he a masochist?) he too adopted the attitude of an aloof bad boy — and he seemed to be even better at it than I was!

So handsome…Whoops! I shook my head, flinging off the two hearts that had replaced my eyes, and resumed my cold and impassive appearance.

“Let’s go, Gui.” I walked out into the arena at a stately pace, looking like the epitome of style.

Chapter 1: Tournament, Begin – translated by Kat

Wearing the Blood Tiara that the team had given me, my heart was overwhelmed with emotion and I hardened my resolve. We will create a legend together, a legend that belongs to us. I closed my eyes and gathered my focus, calming down before I gradually reopened them. With self-confidence and determination etched in my expression, I gave the rest of Odd Squad a smile and took the first step in the journey to creating our legend, the first step onto the stage where we would perform, the first step into…the tournament arena.

Within the arena, the announcer loudly introduced himself. “Hello everyone, I’m your commentator for today, Xiao Li. Let us begin by introducing the two teams who will be fighting in this match! First, coming out from the west entrance is the Perfect Princess Team! The Perfect Princess Team is led by Perfect Princess, a mage of the elf race. Their five other members are a beastman warrior, a human warrior, an elf archer, a human archer and an angel priest.”

I walked over to stand at the very front of our squad. Judging by the thunderous cheers filling the stadium, it seemed that our opponents had already stepped out into the arena. Don’t tell me that the Perfect Princess Team is that famous? Looks like I’m really out of the loop, seeing as I’ve never even heard of them. It doesn’t matter anyway, since Odd Squad will definitely defeat them and become renowned throughout the whole of ‘Second Life’!

Right, it’s time for update 9 and the introduction of new crew members. Before I do that, however, let me first say…

WOOT! WE’VE TRANSLATED ONE WHOLE VOLUME OF THE NOVELS! HUZZAH!

Right, on to other things.

New Translator and Proof-reader

  1. First, we have K00ST3R, our latest translator! K00ST3R will be working on V2C7 (just so you guys know who’s doing what).
  2. For those of you who were wondering who our latest proof-reader is, it’s SHADOW REBIRTH, who has already been assigned LOTS of drudge work /laughs/.

Slight Changes

  • For those of you who are slightly baffled by why we changed the order of the chapters on the “translations” page, it’s because now that we’re moving on to new volumes, we’re going to keep the most recent chapters at the top so that you won’t have to scroll a long way down later on.
  • Some changes made to our notice on the translation page.
  • Major changes made to our recruitment page to give everyone a better idea of what is involved for each role.

Right, that’s it. Happy reading as always.

Extra Chapter: Yu Lian VS Ugly Wolf – translated by Erialis

“Wolf-dàgē, do you think the timing for my spell just now was okay? Is there any area that I should work on?” Yu Lian asked bashfully.

“Not at all, I think it was really well done. The timing, direction, and strength of the magic were all perfect,” replied Ugly Wolf with a gentle smile.

“Really?”

Yes, it was pretty well done, but I think she would do even better if she didn’t stop to ask Wolf-dàgē for his opinion – and end up chatting for ten minutes – each time she finished casting a spell, I thought exasperatedly. I continued to fight mob after mob, even as I rolled my eyes N number of times at the couple, who were happily chatting away.

“It’s been so long and they’re still there in their private little world, and they’re not even paying the rest of us any attention. Their behavior’s…going to make me die of envy,” I complained as I cast yet another somewhat aggrieved glance at the two. Read More »

UPDATE 8.1: PROOFREADER RECRUITMENT CLOSED. PLEASE CHECK YOUR EMAIL FOR A REPLY. THANKS!

As usual, it’s an update post right after a chapter release. There’s a lot of accumulated news, so this will be a pretty long post.

Site and Chapter Updates

First off, an apology from the crew for having delayed the release of V1C7 by three whole weeks (instead of the usual one week break between chapters). Summer is usually the time for travel, holidays, returning to home countries and so on, so some of our crew have been kept away from their computers by RL events. As always, precedence is given to RL stuff, but there’s also been some procrastination by a number of us (we’re all humans, forgive us… lol) – although to compensate for it, some of the crew have been insanely diligent as well.

From the huge silence on our comments board, we can infer that we have very patient readers, so for that, you will be duly rewarded with faster releases this week – basically, we’ll be giving you three weeks’ worth of releases in one week or so. V1C8 will be out once we’re done with proofing (give or take a two or three days) and V2C1 will be out quickly after that. No guarantees about anything after that, though, as we’re a bit rushed off our feet right now (summer classes, prepping for a new semester, work, part-time work, family stuff, etc)… so we’re going to have to rely on you guys to be patient again. >_>

We’ve also updated the novel synopses, which are basically translations of the backflaps of the novels (hardcopy). Note that there are SPOILERS in those synopses, so if you don’t want to have the ending or the rest of the series spoiled for you… well, don’t look!

New Translators and Proofreader

Now, I’d like to introduce ALL our new translators and proofreaders:

  1. XOSUGARHIGHOX, who is also HappyAngelWings from the MF forum (and the very first translator for the series, for those of you who didn’t know). She’ll be translating V2C3, so you can expect an excellent translation for it. ^^
  2. SMERIAN, who will be translating V2C5. (Aside to Smerian: you like jokes, so here’s one – Q: What’s a woodpecker without a beak?)
  3. EILINEL, or Eili, who has translated V2C8, v2C6 and will be translating V3C4 – incredibly hardworking! Rawr!
  4. ELVEW, or Spence, who will be translating V2C4 – O_o and we finally have someone whose avatar is PRINCE. LOL. (Why did it take so long…)
  5. Last but not least, MO05E, or Sooty, our latest proofreader! (She gets to read everything before you guys… wahaha!)

Proof-reader Wanted

Lots of new faces, and we’re starting to run out of characters for avatars… Well, the next bit of news is quite important, and it promises to be quite headachey as well. Simply put, Prince Rev! is looking for a proofreader – yes, we are recruiting. Right now, there’s Hope and Serao, both of whom are extremely competent, but we’re shorthanded whenever one of them has to dash off for RL stuff, so we need a third. There’s been a LOT of people who have applied before, but there’s been some things we missed out on our recruitment page – requirements that have become quite important for a proofreader – so for those who have left a comment before… well, you’ll have to apply again. >_>

Here’s the thing: we may have a lot of translators, but a proofreader won’t have stuff to proofread all the time. In general, translations usually come in a flurry – there might be nothing to work on for a week, and then suddenly there’ll be a lot of stuff to work on, and must be proofed fast… like in one day! You’ll have to be able to work fast when that happens. We need a proofreader who is VERY good at dealing with grammar, run-on sentences, fragmented sentences, and so on. (No need to know Chinese.) This will make life easier for myself and Sooty (the two of us have to plow through the Chinese and then edit everything that doesn’t match the original well enough), because we can just edit adjectives, word choices and know that the proofreader can handle everything else.

The last requirement for our proofreader is that he – or she – must be friendly. We’re not talking about teamwork here, but general attitude, because there’s quite a lot of interaction between proofreaders, editors and translators – we have to discuss things sometimes to reach a consensus on a particular phrase, idea, even names. We need a proofreader who’s not afraid to offer an idea, but also a proofreader who’s able to respect the translator or editor’s opinion when they go, “No, that just doesn’t fit”. Moreover, for each chapter there are two proofreaders, so you might see your edits get re-edited. You’ll have to be able to take it easy when that happens.

If our requirement seems a tad strict, it’s because we want to make sure that our translations are up to par (I would hate to see people who can read Chinese go, “your translation does no justice to the original”…) and that our crew get along swimmingly. We’re an easy-going bunch usually but this is real, hard work, and if a proofreader suddenly bows out because he/she got bored, or if they have a lot of RL work and can’t proof-read in time, or – worst case scenario – their editing skillz just aren’t up to par and they end up increasing everyone else’s workload… well, I’m sure you get the picture.

All right, that’s about it for the updates! Happy reading as always.

-Erialis
